Biogas plants convert raw organic material into methane gas and mineralised organic fertilisers. Europe currently boasts over 10 000 commercial or agricultural Biogas plants, while South Africa has recently seen a few large scale commercial Biogas plants being commissioned. A typical Biogas solution comprises a waste handling area and feeding equipment, an anaerobic reactor, gas cleaning equipment and a boiler for steam or a combined heat and power (CHP) generator. Biogas plants are utilised at abattoirs, dairies, piggeries, wineries, fruit processing, food processing and others. High organic load effluents and waste streams cost significant amounts of money to dispose of or treat. Therefore, turning a waste stream into a valuable product using a Biogas plant has a double impact on the bottom line.
